Imphal, Jan 6: A tragic road accident occurred near Ngaljang village in the Singngat subdivision of Churachandpur district on Monday, resulting in the deaths of four individuals and leaving several others injured.
The victims have been identified as Thangmuanmung Khuptong, Hauchiin, Chingngaihsiam, and Niangzaniang.
Injured passengers were promptly transported to local medical facilities for care, although their health status had not been officially reported at the time of this update.
Initial reports indicate that the accident took place around noon when a DI pick-up truck, carrying approximately 40 passengers, was en route to a sending-off ceremony for a bride in the village.
While navigating a steep and sharply inclined road, the vehicle reportedly lost traction, rolled backward, and fell down the hillside. Four passengers died instantly, while many others suffered injuries.
Local residents and volunteers were the first responders, initiating rescue operations before official authorities arrived to manage the situation.
Police and district officials subsequently reached the scene to conduct further rescue efforts and assessments.
This incident marks the second deadly road accident in Churachandpur district within a week, raising significant concerns about road safety in the hilly regions.
On December 31, another accident involved an ambulance that veered off the road while transporting a body from Moreh town to Churachandpur district headquarters, resulting in the deaths of the driver and a handyman.
Authorities are awaiting more information regarding Monday's accident, and an investigation is anticipated to determine the precise cause of the incident.
