Filmmaker's Untimely Demise in Majuli

Jorhat, Aug 30: In a heartbreaking incident, an Assamese filmmaker lost his life in a road mishap near Kamalabari in Majuli during the early hours of Sunday. The vehicle he was in reportedly veered off the road and fell into a ditch.
Nimananda Das, aged 55, tragically passed away at the scene of the accident, which took place around 2:30 am as he was returning to Majuli after dropping off members of a film crew at the Lakhimpur railway station.
At the time of his passing, Das was engaged in the production of a biopic about Padma Shri awardee Jadav Payeng, with filming ongoing at Bhakat Chapori in Majuli.
Actor Rajib Kro, who was involved in the film, mentioned that Das had used his personal vehicle to transport the crew to Lakhimpur railway station, while another individual traveled separately.
“The other person returned, but Das did not. When we reached out to him late at night, he informed us that he had taken a wrong turn and was on his way back,” Kro recounted, noting that this biopic marked Das’s first major feature film.
“We had been shooting for several days, and although there was no intention for late-night travel, a technical necessity arose, prompting a few crew members to leave,” Kro added.
The film, which includes a cast of various actors and actresses, had completed its shooting schedule in Majuli, with plans to head to Guwahati on Sunday.
“This morning, as we were preparing to depart for Guwahati, we learned about the tragic accident,” Kro said.
The unexpected loss of Das has deeply affected the Assamese film community, with many colleagues expressing their sorrow over the filmmaker's passing.
Before his foray into filmmaking, Das had a background in journalism and made his mark in the Assamese film industry through short films, documentaries, and television series.
