Tragic Passing of BSP MLA Umashankar Singh at 55

Umashankar Singh's Demise in Delhi

Ballia (Uttar Pradesh), August 5 - Umashankar Singh, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) legislator from the Rasra assembly constituency, passed away on Wednesday night at a private hospital in Delhi. He was 55 years old and was the sole BSP MLA in Uttar Pradesh.

Madan Ram, the chief coordinator for BSP in the Azamgarh and Gorakhpur divisions, informed a news agency that Singh succumbed to his illness during treatment at around 8:30 PM. BSP President Mayawati expressed profound sorrow over Singh's passing, describing him as a dedicated, honest, and loyal party leader. In a post on social media, she stated that his death is a significant loss.

Mayawati extended her condolences to Singh's family and supporters, emphasizing that his commitment to the BSP was beyond commendation and that his family had always been closely associated with the party. She mentioned that she was in constant touch with his son during Singh's treatment and learned of his passing from him.

Mayawati assured the family of the party's full support during this challenging time. Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav also expressed his deep condolences on Singh's demise. Ram noted that Singh began his career as a student leader and was elected as the general secretary of the student union at Satish Chandra College in Ballia in 1990-91.

Singh was first elected from the Rasra constituency in 2012 and was re-elected in both 2017 and 2022. He is survived by a son and a daughter.

Singh had been suffering from health issues for an extended period.
