Fatal Paragliding Incident in Kangra District

A tragic accident occurred shortly after takeoff in Kangra district when a tandem paraglider experienced technical difficulties, leading to the death of a seasoned pilot. This incident took place at the internationally renowned Bir-Billing paragliding site.


The mishap happened on Friday evening when the tandem paraglider, which offers flights with a trained pilot, took off from the launch site in Billing.


According to officials from the Bir-Billing Paragliding Association, the paraglider encountered a technical failure shortly after takeoff, losing balance in the air and crashing near a road below the launch site. The pilot lost his life in the accident, while a tourist who was flying with him sustained injuries.


The deceased pilot has been identified as Mohan Singh, a resident of Barot in Mandi district. He suffered severe injuries during the incident.


Local residents and rescue teams quickly arrived at the scene to transport both the pilot and the tourist to the hospital.


Unfortunately, Mohan Singh succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital, while the tourist's condition has stabilized following initial treatment. A case has been registered, and an investigation has commenced to determine the exact causes of the accident.


This incident has raised serious concerns regarding safety measures at adventure sports locations, particularly the regular inspection of equipment, pilot certifications, and strict adherence to safety protocols. Vinay Kumar, the District Tourism Development Officer of Kangra, stated, 'Further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation report.'
