Tragic Night in Kyiv: Russian Assault Claims Lives Amid G7 Summit
Devastating Attack in Kyiv
Kyiv: An overnight assault involving both missiles and drones in Kyiv resulted in the deaths of at least 14 individuals and left 44 others injured, as reported by Ukrainian authorities.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, confirmed that the attack severely damaged a residential building, leading to the destruction of numerous apartments. Emergency responders are currently working to rescue individuals trapped beneath the debris.
According to Ukraine's Emergency Service, 44 people sustained injuries during the incident.
This attack marks the latest in a series of drone and missile strikes targeting Kyiv, coinciding with the Group of Seven summit in Canada, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is anticipated to attend. The summit is scheduled to continue through Tuesday.
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko reported that a US citizen was among those killed, succumbing to shrapnel wounds. The sounds of explosions echoed throughout the night.
Klymenko noted that around thirty apartments were obliterated in one residential block.
Injuries were reported in the Sviatoshynskyi and Solomianskyi districts of the city. Mayor Vitali Klitschko indicated that fires erupted in two additional districts due to debris from drones intercepted by Ukrainian air defenses.
Canada, which currently holds the G7 presidency, extended an invitation to Zelenskyy for the summit, where he is expected to engage in bilateral discussions with various world leaders.
Zelenskyy was scheduled to meet with US President Donald Trump during the summit, but the White House announced that Trump would return to Washington earlier than planned due to escalating tensions in the Middle East.
In recent weeks, Russia has intensified its drone and missile assaults, particularly following a bold operation by Ukraine's Security Service targeting military aircraft at bases deep within Russian territory.
Zelenskyy mentioned that little advancement has been made in direct peace negotiations held in Istanbul, aside from expected prisoner exchanges concluding next week.
