The incident occurred when a dumper truck collided with a car around 11 a.m. on the Rayta Bridge along the Kalyan-Murbad road, according to authorities.

Initial reports indicate that the car was en route from Kalyan when it struck a mixer truck head-on.

Maharashtra's Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, expressed his sorrow over the incident, extending condolences to the families affected.

In a message on X, Fadnavis stated, "The tragic accident near Kalyan on National Highway 61, which claimed 11 lives, is deeply saddening. I offer my heartfelt tributes to the victims and share in the grief of their families. We are coordinating with local authorities."

The police confirmed that the deceased have been sent for post-mortem examinations, while the injured individuals are receiving treatment at a local hospital.

Following the accident, a team from the Titwala Police Station promptly arrived at the scene to conduct rescue and relief efforts.

Reports suggest that there were 12 passengers in the car at the time of the crash, with eight fatalities occurring at the scene and one more succumbing to injuries at the hospital. Local residents attempted to assist the victims immediately after the collision.

Subsequently, two additional individuals died from their injuries while hospitalized.

The vehicle was reportedly heading towards Murbad when the collision took place near Rayta Bridge, as per police statements.

Earlier, Thane Superintendent of Police D.S. Swami had confirmed nine fatalities to a news agency.

Deputy SP Anil Laad from Titwala informed reporters, "We are currently identifying the deceased, and the injured are being treated at a nearby facility. A case has been registered, and we will also examine the involvement of relevant government departments in this incident."
