Tragic Missile Strike at Ukrainian Steel Plant Claims Lives Amid Ongoing Conflict
Missile Attack on ArcelorMittal Steel Plant
London: A missile strike from Russia has tragically resulted in the deaths of two individuals at the ArcelorMittal steel plant in Ukraine, which is the largest steelworks in the country and owned by Indian billionaire Lakshmi Mittal.
The facility, known as ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, located in central Ukraine, issued a strong condemnation of the "devious enemy attacks" in a statement, indicating that the plant was struck by a missile from an aggressor nation on Sunday night.
Initially, the company reported one death along with 13 injuries among its employees and contractors, but later confirmed the discovery of a second victim from the "hostile missile attack."
"Regrettably, the second casualty has been found. There are now two fatalities from last night’s assault," stated PJSC ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih.
"Search and rescue operations are ongoing. An emergency response protocol has been activated, with firefighters, labor protection officials, rescuers, and medical personnel on-site. Those injured in the missile strike are receiving necessary medical attention at local facilities.
"Our thoughts are with the families and friends of our colleagues affected by this hostile attack," the company expressed.
The missile strike caused damage to the main production facilities, leading to a partial halt in operations at the plant.
"Currently, specialists are evaluating the damage and exploring options for restoring operations. We want to stress that our facility is a civilian entity within the mining and metallurgical sector, and we vehemently denounce such treacherous attacks," the company added.
This facility, a civilian industrial site, was previously targeted by a Russian missile in 2022.
"It’s important to note that our facility had already endured a severe missile strike in 2022, resulting in the destruction of a rolling shop and the loss of an employee," the company remarked.
ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, recognized as Ukraine's largest integrated steel producer and a vital economic and security asset, stated that further updates regarding Sunday’s incident would be shared "in line with wartime protocols."
This missile strike occurs amidst ongoing hostilities between Russia and Ukraine, as both nations continue to engage in conflict across Europe.
