Tragic Medical Mismanagement: A Son's Heartbreaking Story
The Disturbing Case of Medical Kidnapping
Abhinav Verma's mother, aged just 50, experienced severe abdominal pain. A nearby private hospital was consulted, where Dr. Kaniraj examined her and recommended an ultrasound. The ultrasound was conducted at the same facility, and Dr. Kaniraj diagnosed gallbladder stones, suggesting a minor operation that would restore her health.
After returning home, Abhinav managed to alleviate her pain with painkillers.
However, days later, Dr. Kaniraj called Abhinav, warning that leaving the stones untreated could be dangerous, urging him to schedule the surgery immediately.
Upon arriving at the hospital, another doctor, Mohammad Shabbir Ahmed, an endoscopy specialist, suggested an ERCP as a precaution.
Dr. Ahmed expressed a slight concern about pancreatic cancer, leading Abhinav to agree to a biopsy of both the pancreas and gallbladder, trusting the doctor's expertise.
The biopsy results were negative, but following the procedures, Abhinav's mother began to suffer excruciating pain. Instead of the gallbladder surgery, she was moved to the ICU due to suspected internal bleeding.
Initially, all her liver, heart, kidney, and blood tests were normal. Yet, doctors soon claimed her liver was affected, and dialysis would be necessary for her kidneys.
One day, they reported her blood pressure was dangerously low, necessitating a pacemaker. Although the pacemaker was installed, her condition deteriorated further, with increasing abdominal pain and failing organs. She had been in the ICU for over a month.
Eventually, the doctors indicated that there was an issue with oxygen supply in her body, requiring immediate surgery. After placing her on the operating table, they demanded a substantial upfront payment before proceeding.
In desperation, Abhinav rushed to gather funds from relatives and friends, managing to collect the required amount on the same day. However, even after the payment was made, the doctors canceled the surgery.
Abhinav was left in the dark regarding the worsening situation and the infections that arose, with only medications, drips, and blood transfusions being administered. He felt both financially and mentally exhausted, as the doctors only communicated with him when it was time to collect payments.
His mother, in a state of unconsciousness, would occasionally moan in pain. Abhinav lamented that she had previously only experienced mild discomfort, and now her vibrant spirit was trapped in a hospital.
After 50 days in the ICU, his mother passed away in agony.
The expenses were staggering: ₹4.3 million for the hospital, ₹1.2 million for medications, and 50 units of blood. Abhinav's mother was placed in the morgue, and he was pressured to settle the remaining bills, with bouncers stationed around her body.
Abhinav insisted on an independent medical review of his mother's reports and body. The hospital reluctantly agreed.
The findings revealed a shocking truth: Abhinav Verma's mother never had any gallstones.
