Tragic Loss: White Tiger Cub Passes Away at Nandankanan Zoo

Sad News from Nandankanan Zoo
Bhubaneswar: Officials reported on Monday that a seven-month-old white tiger cub has died at the Nandankanan zoo.
The cub, which was born to the melanistic tiger Krishna and the white tigress Rupa on November 2 of the previous year, had been showing signs of lameness since March and was receiving consistent veterinary attention, including diagnostic imaging, medication, and nutritional support, according to a zoo representative.
Veterinary experts from the Centre for Wildlife Health (CWH) also assessed the cub, and blood tests did not reveal any significant issues. Although there was some initial improvement, the cub continued to show lameness.
On the evening of May 31, the cub appeared to be eating well and showed no signs of distress. However, by the following day, June 1, it was observed struggling and sadly passed away later that evening.
The zoo officer mentioned that the exact cause of death will be determined following a post-mortem examination.
The mother has been caring for her remaining cubs (one white and two normal-colored), and they are currently kept with her.
There is growing concern among zoo authorities as other cubs of Rupa are displaying similar symptoms. Screening for diseases and ongoing treatment are currently underway.
Following the loss of the white tiger cub, Nandankanan Zoo now houses 27 tigers, which include 18 normal-colored tigers, 5 white tigers, and 4 melanistic tigers.
Earlier this year, in January, a two-month-old white female tiger cub, also born to Rupa and Krishna, tragically died at the zoo.
