Devastating Incidents During Festival Duty

Rayagada has been struck by tragedy as two police constables lost their lives while on duty during the Bahuda Yatra festival on Saturday, casting a shadow over the local police force.

The first incident involved Labanya Ganta, a 24-year-old woman constable from Khedapada panchayat, who tragically died in a road accident at Gunakhala Chhak within the Chandili police jurisdiction.

Reports indicate that she was en route to Shraddha Srikhetra in Rayagada for her festival assignment when her scooter was struck from behind by a truck.

Witnesses noted that the accident occurred as her scooter slowed down near a speed breaker, leading to her falling and being run over by the truck, resulting in her immediate death.

Additionally, a motorcycle traveling in the opposite direction collided with her scooter, injuring its riders, Kantarao Kadraka and Subbarao Kadraka, both aged 40 and from Munigaan village. They are currently receiving treatment at the District Headquarters Hospital.

Authorities have impounded the truck involved and initiated an investigation into the incident. In a separate occurrence, another constable, Tarini Charan Gamang, aged 50, collapsed and passed away while on duty at Tehsil Chhak on National Highway 326.

Gamang, who hailed from Lakshmanguda village and had been serving in the police force since 1997 at the Doraguda police station, was also assigned to the Bahuda Yatra duties. He reportedly felt unwell and collapsed while directing traffic.
