A Community in Mourning
Angel Chakma will no longer return to his village of Machhimar in Tripura. The proximity to the Bangladesh border and a lack of quality education have driven children from Tripura and other northeastern states to pursue their dreams in Dehradun. However, when their lifeless bodies are brought back home, words fail to capture the pain, sorrow, anger, and despair felt by the community. Former MP Tarun Vijay arrived in Dehradun to find silence enveloping Angel's home. His father, brother, and grandfather were engaged in a seven-day prayer ceremony at a nearby Buddhist temple. Meanwhile, Angel's mother, who had been promised by her son that he would secure a placement with a monthly salary of one lakh rupees, was attending the final rites for her son.
When Tarun Vijay met with Angel's father in this somber atmosphere, both were overcome with tears. They acknowledged that the governments of Uttarakhand and Tripura are in communication, with Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami taking strong measures against the perpetrators. The Chakma family has also received financial assistance. The father, with folded hands, simply requested justice. Tarun Prasad Chakma has urged the Uttarakhand Chief Minister to expand the police investigation. The Selakui police initially refused to take an FIR from my son, only doing so after insistence, and later reprimanded us for engaging in politics. Why is there no investigation into the role of Saurabh Barua, the landlord who had a dispute with Angel just a day before he was evicted from the house?
Tarun Vijay reassured them, stating that Uttarakhand and the northeastern region are united in this matter, and he promised to bring these issues to the government's attention. With teary eyes, Angel Chakma's family expressed gratitude for Tarun Vijay's visit to offer condolences. He emphasized that this incident is a grave human rights violation and should not be exploited for political gain. Those attempting to frame this tragedy as a conflict between Uttarakhand and the northeastern states will not succeed.
