Tragic Loss: 15-Year-Old Girl Takes Her Life Over Exam Results in Champua

Heartbreaking Incident in Champua
Champua: A tragic incident has occurred in Shankarpur village, located within the Champua police jurisdiction of Keonjhar district, where a 15-year-old girl, Truptimayee Mahanta, took her own life following disappointing results in her High School Certificate (HSC) exams. She was the daughter of Kamal Mahanta and a student at Naradpur High School.
Truptimayee had recently completed her Class X board examinations, achieving a total of 253 marks out of 600. Family members revealed that she felt immense pressure after discovering her scores were lower than those of her classmates. Although she passed, the results did not meet her expectations.
The results were released on Friday, and Truptimayee learned about her performance during a phone call with friends from her tuition class. The realization that her marks were significantly below her peers led her to experience severe mental distress.
After having dinner on Friday night, she went to bed alongside her younger sister. However, the following morning, her grandfather discovered her hanging in her room. It is believed she used a scarf to hang herself from a wooden beam in their thatched home.
Due to his long-term illness, her father was unable to report the incident. Instead, her uncle, Sudarshan Mahanta, informed the Champua police. Authorities recovered the body and arranged for a post-mortem examination.
Once the formalities were completed, the body was returned to the family. An unnatural death case (16/2025) has been filed, and an investigation is currently in progress.
Officer-in-Charge Debaki Nayak of the Champua police station confirmed the situation, indicating that initial findings point to the girl's tragic decision being influenced by mental stress related to her exam results. This heartbreaking event has cast a shadow over the village.
