Tragic Landslides in China: Death Toll Rises to 16 Amid Typhoon Aftermath

Beijing: In southeastern China, rescue teams have discovered an additional body linked to the rain-induced landslides that occurred last weekend in Jiangxi province, bringing the total fatalities to 16, according to state media reports on Thursday.

The fatalities were reported across three towns in Suichuan County, where relentless rainfall persisted for several days following the landfall of Typhoon Saudel on the eastern coast of China.

A mudslide in Gaoping town accounted for 13 of the deaths, as reported by state broadcaster CCTV. Additionally, two individuals were found deceased in Zuo'an town, while one more was discovered in Tanghu town.

The official Xinhua News Agency indicated that over 18,000 residents have been evacuated from Suichuan County.

In a neighboring area, Hunan province, two more fatalities were reported due to the rains associated with the typhoon, although the specific circumstances of these deaths were not detailed in the CCTV report. It was noted that the heavy rainfall had led to landslides and other calamities.

Typhoon Saudel made landfall twice in Zhejiang province on August 28 and again as a tropical storm in Fujian province on September 3. Jiangxi and Hunan provinces are located inland from the coastal regions of Zhejiang and Fujian.
