Severe Weather Causes Catastrophic Damage in Mon District

Kohima, July 21: The toll from the catastrophic flash floods and landslides in Nagaland's Mon district has tragically risen to nine, following the recovery of five additional bodies on Tuesday. Four individuals are still unaccounted for as search and rescue efforts persist in the most affected regions.

The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) reported that five fatalities occurred in Shantham Ward of Mon town, where landslides buried numerous homes.

Additionally, four other individuals lost their lives in various rain-related incidents throughout the district, while teams continue to search for the missing persons.

In Naginimora, four individuals swept away by flash floods were successfully rescued, with one suffering fractures and the others sustaining minor injuries, according to officials.

As per the NSDMA, approximately 7,460 residents have been impacted by the rain-induced disasters across the state.

Mon district has been the hardest hit, accounting for all nine reported deaths.

The relentless rainfall has severely disrupted daily life across multiple districts, damaging infrastructure, agricultural land, and public utilities. Authorities have warned that the extent of the destruction may increase as damage assessments are still ongoing.

Initial evaluations indicate that 64 homes in 93 villages across ten districts have suffered damage due to landslides, flash floods, and related incidents. Officials anticipate that these numbers will rise as more reports come in from remote areas.

The disaster has also significantly affected livestock, with at least 83 animals reported lost across the impacted districts, including 15 mithuns, 13 cattle, and 53 pigs, according to official estimates.

Shamator district has seen the highest number of affected individuals, with nearly 7,000 people from six villages impacted by extensive flooding and landslides.

Providing district-specific details, the NSDMA noted that 12 villages in Tuensang district were affected, impacting 201 individuals. In Zunheboto district, around 30 villages experienced landslides, affecting at least 26 people.

Rescue and relief operations are being conducted by district administrations, disaster response teams, and security personnel, despite facing challenging weather conditions and difficult terrain.

The death toll has sharply increased from initial reports on July 19, when landslides triggered by continuous rainfall struck various locations in Mon town, burying homes and trapping residents under debris.

Rescue teams, including personnel from the district administration, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, and Assam Rifles, have been deployed, although heavy rain and unstable slopes continue to hinder operations.

Officials have stated that search operations will persist until all missing individuals are located, as Nagaland remains on high alert with forecasts of additional rainfall.
