Landslide Incident in North Sikkim

On Sunday night, a devastating landslide hit an army camp located in the Chatten region of North Sikkim, resulting in the deaths of three Indian Army members and leaving six others unaccounted for.

Four injured personnel have been successfully rescued, while search efforts continue for the missing soldiers.

The deceased have been identified as Havaldar Lakhwinder Singh, Lance Naik Munish Thakur, and porter Abhishek Lakhada.

This landslide was caused by intense rainfall that commenced around 7 PM near Lachen town in the Mangan district.

In a related event, over 100 tourists stranded in Lachung town since May 30 have been safely evacuated to Phidang in the Lower Dzongu area.

These tourists were part of a larger group of more than 1,600 individuals trapped in Lachung due to landslides and swollen rivers caused by heavy rains.

Additionally, another convoy carrying 1,678 tourists is currently en route to Phidang.

The Teesta River has experienced a surge in water levels due to the heavy rainfall and a cloudburst, isolating several regions in North Sikkim.

The India Meteorological Department has issued warnings advising both residents and tourists to refrain from unnecessary travel, remain indoors when possible, and avoid areas near riverbanks and landslide-prone locations.
