Dewas, Nov 2: A tragic incident occurred in Madhya Pradesh's Dewas district when a police officer was fatally struck by a truck believed to be involved in transporting illegal liquor during a police operation, officials reported on Monday.

Dilip Puri, the in-charge of Khategaon Police Station, was killed instantly when the truck's rear wheel ran over him while he was attempting to stop the vehicle on the Harda-Nemawar highway late Sunday night.

Puri, who joined the force in 2007 as a Sub-Inspector, was part of a police team conducting checks based on intelligence regarding a truck allegedly transporting illicit liquor from Harda to Gujarat via Indore.

Initial reports indicate that Dewas Superintendent of Police Aditya Mishra had dispatched over five police teams to intercept the truck, which included officers from Kannod, Satwas, and Khategaon.

While police teams were in pursuit of the truck, barricades were established at various points to halt its progress.

According to reports, the truck driver stopped to drink water on the highway when Traffic Inspector Dilip Puri approached him to make an arrest. A confrontation ensued between Puri and the driver.

During the altercation, the driver allegedly tried to escape with the truck, causing Puri to fall, and the rear wheel of the vehicle tragically ran over him, leading to his death.

The truck, registered as MP 43 H 4786, was found loaded with liquor. Authorities have seized the vehicle and taken the driver into custody.

Police officials have identified Rahul Jaiswal from Harda as a key figure in the suspected liquor smuggling operation, with indications that smugglers from Dewas may also be involved.

Upon learning of the incident, SP Aditya Mishra and other senior officers promptly arrived at the scene to commence an investigation.

Puri had been serving as the Khategaon Police Station in-charge and had previously worked at the Hira Nagar and Chandan Nagar police stations in Indore.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the details surrounding this incident and the broader liquor smuggling operation.
