Tragic Incident: Mosque Muezzin Dies After Self-Immolation in Bareilly
Muezzin's Death Sparks Investigation
A mosque muezzin in the Fatehganj West area of Bareilly district has tragically passed away after reportedly setting himself on fire due to alleged harassment from his wife. According to police officer Devesh Singh, the incident occurred on Tuesday when Abdul Qadir, the muezzin of the Hussaini Mosque located in Ansari Mohalla, doused himself in petrol and ignited a fire at his home. He succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Bareilly on Wednesday evening.
Singh noted that Qadir's brother has filed a complaint with the police, accusing his sister-in-law, Sadma, of inciting his brother to commit suicide. During his treatment, Abdul reportedly told the police that his wife, in collusion with her brother, was attempting to seize his property, and that she subjected him to harassment whenever he opposed her actions, leading him to take such a drastic step.
According to neighbors, Qadir and Sadma frequently quarreled over various issues, and on the afternoon of July 28, Qadir set himself ablaze. Witnesses attempted to extinguish the flames with water before he was rushed to the hospital.
Singh confirmed that the police have sent the body for a post-mortem examination.
