Fatal Thunderstorm Claims Lives in Rudraprayag

In a tragic event at the popular tourist destination of Tungnath-Chopta in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district, two brothers from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, lost their lives due to a severe thunderstorm, accompanied by heavy rain and lightning. Additionally, two of their companions sustained serious injuries, as reported by local officials on Saturday.


Nandan Singh Rajwar, the district disaster management officer of Rudraprayag, informed that on Friday evening, authorities received alerts about tourists being stranded in Tungnath-Chopta due to the adverse weather conditions. Consequently, rescue and relief teams were promptly dispatched to the site.


Upon arrival, the teams quickly initiated rescue operations, battling the storm to evacuate the critically injured individuals, who were then transported to a hospital in Ukhimath.


According to Rajwar, the two brothers, Abhinav Vajpayee (19) and his elder sibling Abhishek Vajpayee (22), tragically succumbed to injuries caused by lightning during the inclement weather. Local residents of Chopta reported that the sudden onset of the storm created a panic-stricken atmosphere throughout the area.


Weather conditions in mountainous regions can change rapidly. Following this unfortunate incident, local authorities have urged travelers and trekkers heading to Tungnath, Chopta, and other elevated tourist spots to seek shelter in safe locations during adverse weather and to plan their journeys based on meteorological forecasts.
