Police Shooting in Sivasagar District

Jorhat, Jan 7: A man was fatally shot by police in Assam's Sivasagar district after he reportedly threatened officers with a machete in the Demow region.

The individual, identified as Ranjit Pandav, allegedly went on a violent spree while intoxicated, attacking neighbors and instilling fear in the community.

According to Demow Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Hiren Kumar Deka, Pandav first assaulted his neighbor, Martin Pandav, and Martin's wife, Gita Pandav, with a sharp weapon, causing serious injuries to both.

“Ranjit attacked Martin and Gita with a sharp object. Local residents quickly took the injured couple to the hospital. When our police team arrived, we found him pursuing individuals with a machete,” Deka explained.

The couple was promptly transported to a medical facility by nearby residents and later transferred to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh, where doctors reported that Gita is stable, while Martin remains in critical condition.

Upon receiving reports of the attack, police arrived at the scene and found Ranjit allegedly chasing people with a machete.

Officials noted that a couple from the neighborhood had previously attempted to intervene but were also threatened by Ranjit, escalating the situation.

Deka mentioned that multiple attempts were made to calm him down.

“We tried to reason with him, but he was unresponsive. After waiting for approximately thirty minutes, the police fired two warning shots. When that did not deter him, we aimed for his leg,” Deka stated.

After Ranjit was shot, police reported difficulties in arranging an ambulance and transported him to the hospital in a police vehicle, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Ranjit's wife informed the media that her husband had a history of violent behavior, especially when drinking. She mentioned that the family was not present at home when the incident unfolded.

“He had previously threatened people while intoxicated. When we returned home, there was a large crowd, and even the police could not control him, leading to the shooting,” she recounted.

Senior police officials confirmed that the situation in the area is now stable and that a thorough investigation will be conducted regarding the events that led to the shooting, following standard procedures.
