Escalating Violence Against Minorities in Bangladesh

Dhaka: In a tragic turn of events, a young Hindu man lost his life in Bangladesh after jumping into a canal to escape a mob that accused him of theft. The incident occurred in the Mohadevpur upazila of Naogaon district, where 25-year-old Mithun Sarkar was pursued by locals on Tuesday afternoon.

According to reports from local media, Mithun was chased by a group of individuals who suspected him of robbery. In a desperate attempt to evade them, he leaped into a nearby canal, but the strong currents quickly swept him away.

Emergency services, including the Mohadevpur Police Station and the Fire Service, responded promptly to the scene. Despite their efforts, Mithun was found deceased after several hours of searching.

Officer-in-Charge Shahidul Islam confirmed the incident, stating, "Initial reports indicate that the young man jumped into the canal while fleeing from a robbery accusation. His body was recovered with assistance from the fire service. An investigation is underway, and legal actions will follow the autopsy results."

This incident marks the seventh case of violence against Hindus in just 19 days, with three occurring this week alone, underscoring a troubling trend of escalating attacks on minority communities in Bangladesh.

On the previous Monday, two Hindu men were killed in separate incidents within a single day. The first victim, 40-year-old Sarat Chakraborty Mani, was attacked in Narsingdi district by individuals wielding sharp weapons, allegedly linked to an extremist group.

The second victim, 38-year-old Rana Pratap Bairagi, was shot in public in Monirampur Upazila of Jashore district. Earlier that week, Khokon Chandra Das was also killed by a mob in Shariatpur district.

Last week, another Hindu man, Bajendra Biswas, was fatally shot by a colleague in Mymensingh district. Reports from December revealed the lynching of 29-year-old Amrit Mondal and the brutal killing of 25-year-old Dipu Chandra Das, who was murdered over false blasphemy claims.

The rise in violence against minorities, particularly Hindus, has sparked widespread outrage both domestically and internationally, drawing attention from various human rights organizations.
