Tragic Incident at Denver Airport: Frontier Airlines Flight Hits Trespasser During Takeoff
Accident Overview
A Frontier Airlines flight with over 230 individuals on board tragically struck a person on the runway while taking off from Denver International Airport late Friday night. This incident led to an emergency evacuation after an engine fire was reported. Air traffic control audio captured the pilot of Frontier Flight 4345 stating, "Tower, Frontier 4345, we’re stopping on the runway. Uh, we just hit somebody… we have an engine fire." Following the collision, airport personnel informed controllers that they had found limbs on the runway and believed the aircraft had hit an individual.
According to Denver International Airport, the individual had breached security by climbing over a perimeter fence and was crossing the runway when the incident occurred around 11:19 PM local time. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy referred to the individual as a "trespasser," emphasizing the seriousness of the breach. He stated on social media, "Late last night, a trespasser breached airport security at Denver Int’l Airport, deliberately scaled a perimeter fence, and ran out onto a runway. No one should EVER trespass on an airport."

Reports from ABC News, citing anonymous sources, indicated that the individual was partially drawn into one of the Airbus A321neo’s engines, resulting in a brief fire that firefighters later extinguished. At the time of the collision, the aircraft was traveling at approximately 139 mph. The flight was en route to Los Angeles, carrying 224 passengers and seven crew members. Frontier Airlines confirmed that smoke was detected inside the cabin, prompting an aborted takeoff and evacuation via emergency slides as a precaution.
Images from the scene depicted passengers on the tarmac, wrapped in blankets after the evacuation. Denver International Airport reported that 12 individuals sustained minor injuries, with five requiring transport to local hospitals. Most passengers were subsequently taken back to the terminal and placed on another Frontier flight. In a statement, Frontier Airlines expressed deep sorrow over the incident and stated they were cooperating with airport officials and safety authorities for an investigation. Inspections revealed no breaches in the perimeter fence, and Runway 17L remained closed while investigations continued. The National Transportation Safety Board is coordinating with the Federal Aviation Administration and local law enforcement but has not released additional details. The identity of the deceased has not been disclosed. This incident has raised concerns regarding aviation safety in the U.S., especially following a series of recent airport and air traffic occurrences.
