Devastating Fire at Tarapith Hotel
Tarapith (West Bengal): A tragic incident unfolded early Monday morning when a fire broke out at a hotel in Birbhum district, resulting in the deaths of eight individuals. Authorities have detained one person in connection with alleged negligence regarding the hotel's fire safety measures.
At the time of the fire, 43 guests were present in the hotel, with one currently receiving medical attention and 34 others discharged after initial assessments.
The blaze ignited around 4:30 AM on the ground floor while many guests, including pilgrims visiting for the last Monday of the holy month of Shravan, were asleep.
Thick smoke quickly filled the building, trapping several guests on the upper floors. Firefighters arrived promptly and managed to control the situation.
Injured individuals were transported to Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital, with some suffering from burns and others affected by smoke inhalation.
Hotel representatives suggested that a short circuit caused the fire, which reportedly began near the reception area after an electrical component malfunctioned.
The precise cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The flames spread rapidly due to decorative materials within the hotel, creating a hazardous environment for guests.
In response to the incident, police have detained an individual for failing to maintain the hotel's fire safety systems.
The Birbhum district administration has initiated a thorough review of electrical systems and fire safety protocols in local hotels and lodges, especially with the upcoming Kaushiki Amavasya festival anticipated to attract many visitors.
Officials emphasized the necessity for all accommodations to have reliable electrical setups and effective fire prevention measures.
Mamata Banerjee, the former Chief Minister of West Bengal, expressed her sorrow over the tragedy, stating, "I am deeply shocked by the sudden and tragic fire at Tarapith. I pray for the souls of those who lost their lives in this terrible tragedy and for strength for those who have been left devastated by the loss of their loved ones. I also pray for the speedy and complete recovery of those undergoing treatment."
A survivor from Kolkata recounted the chaos during the fire, saying, "Suddenly, the entire hotel was engulfed in smoke. We could not breathe, and it was hard to find an escape route."
Another guest, Tapanjyoti Mondal, described being trapped in his room with his family for nearly 45 minutes, stating, "We could not come out of the door because of the blaze. Since the room had no window, we escaped through an opening near the bathroom ceiling." His mother lost consciousness, and his sister sustained injuries during the ordeal.
