A catastrophic fire erupted at a hotel in Malviya Nagar, Delhi, on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of 21 individuals, among whom 17 were foreign nationals. Officials reported that the majority of the deceased hailed from Liberia, Nigeria, Mozambique, and Bangladesh. The blaze broke out at approximately 8:48 AM at the Flourish Stay B&B, leading to the tragic loss of life and the rescue of over 40 others.
Mayor Expresses Condolences and Calls for Investigation
Pravesh Wahi, the Mayor of Delhi, expressed profound sorrow over the devastating incident at a restaurant in Malviya Nagar, labeling it a serious and alarming event. He emphasized the need for stringent public safety measures and compliance with fire safety standards in buildings. Wahi assured that a thorough and impartial investigation into the causes of such incidents would be conducted. He has directed the Municipal Commissioner to initiate a detailed inquiry into the matter.
Investigation to Examine Compliance with Safety Regulations
The investigation will focus on whether the establishment adhered to municipal building codes, fire safety regulations, and other legal requirements. Additionally, it will assess if any negligence or violations occurred on the part of municipal officials or staff. The Mayor has mandated that if any official's role is found to be questionable or if administrative negligence is identified, strict and effective action will be taken against those responsible. He reiterated that any form of negligence would not be tolerated.

Wahi has requested a comprehensive report on the investigation and actions taken within three days to facilitate informed decision-making based on the findings. He specifically instructed that the investigation be completed promptly and prioritized. The Mayor affirmed the commitment of the Municipal Corporation to the safety and welfare of the citizens of Delhi. He also directed officials to review compliance with fire safety and building standards across all commercial establishments, restaurants, and public buildings in the capital to prevent such unfortunate incidents in the future.
