Hooch Tragedy Strikes Sagar District
In Sagar district, Madhya Pradesh, a tragic incident involving spurious liquor has resulted in the deaths of at least ten individuals, with several others reported ill. This unfortunate event occurred on Sunday, just days after a similar incident in Gujarat.
A local BJP legislator claimed that the death toll had risen to eleven due to the consumption of the toxic liquor.
Madhya Pradesh's Chief Minister, Mohan Yadav, has initiated an investigation into the matter, emphasizing that those responsible will face consequences.
As a precautionary measure, the district administration has shut down seven liquor shops in the vicinity and ordered immediate testing of the liquor.
This incident in BJP-led Madhya Pradesh follows a previous tragedy in Gujarat's Bhavnagar district, where thirteen people lost their lives due to spurious liquor, despite the state being 'dry' with a ban on alcohol production, sale, and consumption.
According to Sagar Collector Pratibha Pal, ten fatalities occurred in two villages within Banda tehsil, located approximately 30 kilometers from the district center. She confirmed that screening for symptoms was ongoing, with individuals experiencing fever and headaches being transferred to the Bundelkhand Medical College and Hospital (BMCH).
Three patients have already been admitted to BMCH, and none are reported to be in critical condition, as per the official's statement.
The first death was recorded early Sunday morning, and preliminary autopsy results are still pending.
When asked if the death toll could increase, the collector refrained from making any predictions.
Banda BJP MLA Virendra Lodhi stated that, to his knowledge, eleven individuals had died from the spurious liquor, with around twenty-five others being transferred from Banda Civil Hospital to other facilities for advanced treatment.
CM Yadav expressed his sorrow over the deaths in the Banda-Shahgarh region, labeling the situation as 'extremely sad and unfortunate.' He instructed the responsible minister and officials to conduct a thorough investigation and take stringent action against those accountable.
Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Devda has also requested immediate updates from officials and has directed them to ensure prompt investigations, relief efforts, and medical care in the affected areas.
Senior officials, including the Sagar divisional commissioner, inspector general, collector, and superintendent of police, have visited the impacted region to assess the situation.
They have met with affected families and evaluated the medical arrangements for patients receiving treatment in hospitals.
The district administration has reiterated its commitment to sealing the seven liquor shops and has mandated immediate sampling. They have also called for strict legal action against individuals involved in the illegal liquor trade.
Additionally, the administration has urged anyone who has consumed liquor and is experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, headaches, or fever to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health center.
