Fatal Accident During Bhogali Bihu Celebrations
Jorhat, Jan 14: In a tragic hit-and-run incident early on Bhogali Bihu, two individuals lost their lives and four others sustained severe injuries in Dihingiya village, located in Assam’s Jorhat district.
The victims have been identified as Abhijit Phukan and Amrit Gogoi, while the injured include Pranjit Gogoi, Manas Gogoi, Sujit Gogoi, and Pankaj Dutta.
Pankaj Dutta has been transferred to Dibrugarh Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) for specialized care, while the remaining three are receiving treatment at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH). Medical professionals have reported their conditions as critical. All individuals involved are from the same village.
The collision occurred around 3:30 AM at Bamun Pukhuri Dihingiya village, under the jurisdiction of Teok police station, when an SUV (AS-03 AN-9141) reportedly struck a group of villagers who were preparing meat for the Bhogali Bihu festivities.
A local resident recounted, “At approximately 3:30 AM, six villagers were setting up for Bhogali Bihu when the vehicle, driven by Mintu Gogoi, collided with them. Amrit and Abhijit died instantly, while four others are in critical condition.”
The incident has sparked outrage among the community, with residents claiming that the vehicle was operated by Mintu Gogoi, identified as a local BJP worker. This allegation has not yet been confirmed by law enforcement.
“As of now, the police have not apprehended Mintu Gogoi. We will not accept the bodies of the deceased until he is arrested. There is also a demand for the last rites to be conducted in front of his home,” stated another villager.
Community members expressed concern for the economically disadvantaged families of the deceased and injured, insisting that the accused should cover all funeral and medical expenses, along with providing adequate compensation.
Villagers are calling for prompt justice and financial support, emphasizing the long-term repercussions for the affected families. “Two lives have been lost, and four others may face lifelong disabilities. We demand justice. The accused must pay for all medical expenses and ensure compensation for the families’ survival,” a villager added.
