Tragic Flooding in Chhattisgarh Claims Four Lives After Dam Breach

Fatal Incident in Balrampur District

In Balrampur district of Chhattisgarh, a sudden flood caused by the breach of a small dam has resulted in the deaths of four individuals, with three others reported missing, as confirmed by officials on Wednesday. Additionally, three people sustained injuries during the incident.

Dam Breach Following Heavy Rainfall

Rajendra Katara, the district collector of Balrampur, stated that heavy rainfall led to a crack in the Luti (Satbahini) dam located in Dhaneshpur village late Tuesday night. The dam, constructed in the early 1980s, allowed water to escape through the fissure, inundating nearby homes and fields, resulting in an unexpected flood.

Casualties and Ongoing Rescue Efforts

The district collector reported that four individuals, including a woman and her mother-in-law, lost their lives while they were asleep in their homes. Rescue operations are currently underway to locate the three missing persons. Teams from the district administration and police arrived at the scene promptly after receiving the news.

Government Response and Support

Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai expressed his sorrow over the incident, stating that the government is closely monitoring the situation and will provide all possible assistance to the affected families. He noted that several livestock perished, and homes and crops were severely damaged due to the flooding.

Aid and Relief Measures

The Chief Minister emphasized the distressing nature of the situation for the impacted families. He instructed the district administration to prepare proposals for granting ex-gratia assistance to the families of the deceased and other affected individuals. Additionally, he called for a survey of the damages and for the provision of temporary shelter, food, and other essential items to the affected families.
