Devastating Incident in Thrissur

In a tragic event in Thrissur, Kerala, a catastrophic explosion at a fireworks manufacturing facility resulted in the deaths of at least 13 individuals, with many others sustaining injuries. The incident occurred on Tuesday in Mundathicode, located in central Kerala's Thrissur district.

Among the injured, 13 individuals, including three women, are currently receiving medical care. Hospital officials reported that five of these patients are in critical condition, suffering from severe burn injuries exceeding 70%.

At the time of the explosion, approximately 40 people were believed to be present in the facility, which was preparing fireworks for the upcoming Thrissur Pooram festival scheduled for April 26.

Authorities confirmed that 13 bodies were recovered, some of which were dismembered, and are being counted as separate fatalities. A control room has been established at the Government Medical College in Thrissur to manage the situation.

Footage from the scene depicted local residents participating in rescue efforts, helping to transport the injured and recover remains from the explosion site.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has ordered that all necessary medical support be provided and has instructed officials to ensure effective coordination of rescue and relief operations. He also mentioned that, if needed, specialized doctors from outside the state would be brought in to assist with the treatment of those with severe burns.

All relevant departments, including police, fire and rescue services, health, revenue, and disaster management, have been activated, and a special mechanism has been established to oversee the situation.

State Health Minister Veena George has directed officials to guarantee specialized care for the injured and to make necessary arrangements at both the Government Medical College and Thrissur General Hospital. Nearby hospitals have also been placed on high alert.

Residents reported that the explosion occurred around 3:30 PM, with subsequent blasts complicating rescue efforts. Fireworks were being produced in several temporary structures situated in a remote area surrounded by paddy fields.

A government representative at the scene noted that food had been prepared for around 40 workers, suggesting that this number may have been present during the incident. Some workers managed to escape with minor injuries.

Rescue operations led by fire and rescue personnel, along with police, faced significant challenges due to ongoing explosions. Wadakanchery Municipal Chairman P N Surendran, who visited the site, stated that blasts were still occurring, hindering access to the area.

He mentioned that the exact number of workers present and injured remains unclear, and extreme heat is suspected to have contributed to the incident. The sound of the explosion was reportedly heard several kilometers away, causing damage to nearby homes.

Eyewitnesses described multiple sheds spread across several acres, with at least five destroyed in the fire. Most of the victims were reported to be locals from Mundathikkode and the adjacent Kundannur areas.

Wilson, a survivor, recounted the horrifying moment of the explosion, stating, "There was a sudden flash beside me and then fire. After that, I don’t remember anything." He confirmed that all workers at the facility were locals and that no migrant laborers were employed.

The Thrissur district collector has initiated a magisterial inquiry into the incident, assigning the sub-collector to investigate the cause of the explosion and its aftermath.

The state government has allocated Rs 50 lakh for rescue and related operations, and efforts to locate and neutralize live fireworks are ongoing.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the loss of life in the explosion and announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased.

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, along with his sister, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, also conveyed their condolences. Chief Minister Vijayan expressed his sympathies, while CPI(M) state secretary M V Govindan described the incident as "extremely shocking."

Union Minister of State for Petroleum, Natural Gas, and Tourism, Suresh Gopi, expressed his shock and sadness on social media, stating it was unimaginable that such a tragedy had occurred to ordinary workers.
