Devastating Fires Strike Major Cities

On Wednesday, catastrophic fires in Delhi and Indore resulted in the tragic loss of 17 lives, including numerous children, while also damaging several shops in bustling markets in Ahmedabad and Chandigarh, leading to widespread panic and extensive firefighting efforts.

Emergency teams were deployed swiftly to control the fires and rescue individuals trapped inside, while investigations into the incidents were initiated, and financial aid was promised to the victims' families.

In Delhi, a devastating fire engulfed a multi-storey residential and commercial building in the Palam area, claiming the lives of nine family members, including three children and a 70-year-old woman.

Three additional individuals sustained injuries, with two jumping from the building at Ram Chowk Market near Palam Metro Station in a desperate bid to escape the flames.

The building housed a cloth and cosmetic store on the lower floors, while the owner, Rajender Kashyap, resided on the upper levels with his family.

Witnesses reported that the fire likely originated on the first floor and spread rapidly, potentially fueled by flammable beauty products stored in the shop.

At the time of the incident, several family members were away; Rajender was in Goa, and one of his sons was on vacation.

The fire claimed the lives of Rajender's wife, Lado, 70, their sons Pravesh, 33, and Kamal, 39, along with Kamal's wife Ashu, 35, and their three daughters aged 15, six, and three. Additionally, Rajender's daughter Himanshi, 22, and daughter-in-law Deepika, 28, also perished in the blaze.

Anil, 32, the third son, attempted to lower his two-year-old daughter from the third floor to safety but ended up jumping himself. Both sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment.

The couple's fourth son, 29-year-old Sachin, who jumped to a neighboring building, also suffered injuries and is being treated for approximately 25% burns at Safdarjung Hospital.

A significant firefighting operation involved around 30 fire engines and 11 ambulances, along with personnel from police, BSES, Air Force Police, and the NDRF.

Images from the scene depicted thick black smoke billowing from the building as firefighters battled the flames in the crowded market area.

The fire was finally extinguished around 2:20 PM, followed by cooling operations.

Eyewitnesses recounted the frantic efforts of locals trying to rescue those trapped by breaking windows and even a wall from an adjacent building, although dense smoke hindered their access.

Some residents claimed there were delays due to technical issues with firefighting equipment, but officials have not confirmed this. The precise cause of the fire remains under investigation.

In Indore, Madhya Pradesh, a fire claimed the lives of eight family members after an explosion at an Electric Vehicle (EV) charging point outside their three-storey home.

Authorities reported that a car being charged outside caught fire following the explosion, which quickly spread to the building.

Investigators discovered evidence of 10 to 11 LPG cylinders stored in the house, and explosions from these gas containers exacerbated the fire that erupted around 4 AM.

The victims included six-year-old Tanmay, 12-year-old Rashi Sethia, 30-year-old Simran, 35-year-old Tinu, 60-year-old Suman Sethia, 65-year-old Vijay Sethia, 22-year-old Chhotu Sethia, and 65-year-old Manoj Pugalia.

Pugalia's relatives were also present during the fire, and three individuals were rescued by breaking through the building's grille.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound sorrow over the incidents and announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh from the PM National Relief Fund for the families of each deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.

Modi extended his condolences to those mourning their loved ones and wished for the swift recovery of the injured.

In response to the fires, authorities in both cities took immediate action.

Delhi's Lt Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, during his first meeting with the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), called for a thorough fire audit across the city.

In a post on social media, the LG's office stated, 'Discussed today’s unfortunate residential fire incident; directed a comprehensive fire audit across localities and institutions to strengthen prevention.'

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who participated in the high-level meeting, ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident and announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of adult victims and Rs 5 lakh for the families of minors who lost their lives.

The Madhya Pradesh government, alarmed by the tragedy, announced a detailed investigation by a committee of experts and the development of a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for EV charging.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed his grief over the incident, describing it as extremely heartbreaking.

In Ahmedabad, Gujarat, a fire affected over 25 shops in a wholesale cloth market in the Kalupur area, although no casualties were reported.

The fire was reported around 1:35 PM, prompting the dispatch of approximately 36 fire engines to the Revdi Bazaar market, according to Chief Fire Officer Amit Dongre.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, but it spread rapidly due to the large quantities of clothing stored in the shops.

Meanwhile, in Chandigarh, a fire erupted in a shop located in Sector 22, a busy commercial area, with no casualties reported so far.

The fire began on the first floor and spread to adjacent shops, with more than 15 fire engines deployed to combat the blaze, and additional units called in from Mohali, Punjab.

An official noted that the presence of certain chemicals in one of the shops intensified the fire.
