Tragic Firecracker Factory Blast Claims 25 Lives in Tamil Nadu: What Happened?
Explosion at Firecracker Manufacturing Unit
Virudhunagar: The tragic explosion at a firecracker manufacturing facility in Kattanarpatti, near Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu, has resulted in a rising death toll of 25, as confirmed by officials on Monday.
The incident took place on Sunday at the Vanaja Firecracker Factory, owned by Muthu Manickam from Govindanallur, which was operating legally under a valid Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) license.
Initial investigations revealed that over 30 workers were present at the factory, engaged in their regular production tasks when the explosion occurred.
Authorities indicated that the blast was caused by friction during the manufacturing process, leading to an unexpected ignition of explosive materials. The explosion was so powerful that it completely destroyed at least four rooms of the factory, with the sound being audible up to 10 kilometers away.
Earlier on Sunday, 23 charred bodies were retrieved from the site.
Currently, more than 12 individuals injured in the blast are receiving treatment at the Virudhunagar Government Medical College Hospital. Unfortunately, two women succumbed to their injuries on Monday morning despite medical efforts. The deceased have been identified as Panchavarnam and Pechiammal.
As a result, the total number of fatalities has now reached 25.
Following a complaint lodged by Vanitha, the administrative officer of the Kattinarpatti facility, the Vachakarapatti police have initiated legal action against Easwari and her husband, Muthumanickam, under four different legal provisions.
Four specialized police teams have been established to locate the couple, who are currently on the run. With the death toll at 25, 21 bodies have been identified, and post-mortem examinations for these have been completed. Efforts to identify the remaining four bodies are ongoing.
Moreover, after the post-mortem examinations, the families of the deceased have refused to accept the bodies. They have demanded that the management provide the promised compensation of Rs 5 lakhs in the form of a Demand Draft (DD) instead of a cheque.
In response to the situation, over 50 police personnel have been deployed to the area to ensure security.
