Tragic Fire in Delhi's Vivek Vihar Claims Nine Lives
Fire Incident Exposes Security Flaws
A devastating fire that broke out early Sunday morning in the Vivek Vihar area of Delhi has raised serious concerns about safety measures in residential buildings. The iron grills installed for security and a locked rooftop door turned into deadly barriers, leading to the tragic loss of nine lives from two families, including a young child.
Building Design Contributes to Fatalities
According to rescue teams, the building's design was a significant factor in the fatalities. This four-story structure, which included a basement, had only one staircase for exit and lacked any emergency exits. As the fire spread, residents in the back were unable to escape due to the iron grills, while those who attempted to flee to the roof found it locked.
Explosion Triggers the Fire
The incident occurred around 3:30 AM while residents were asleep. Eyewitnesses reported a loud explosion caused by an air conditioner bursting, which quickly ignited flames that engulfed the entire building. The fire spread to nearby structures due to the lack of space, prompting desperate cries for help as two children attempted to jump to safety.
Families Grieve Their Loss
Firefighters discovered one body on the first floor, five on the second, and three near the staircase. Among the deceased were Arvind Jain (60), his wife, son, daughter-in-law, and grandson. Another family, led by Nitin Jain (50), also lost their lives, including his wife and son. Shikha Jain, who lived on the first floor, perished in the blaze, while her husband sustained injuries.
Neglect of Safety Standards
Authorities, including police and disaster management teams, are investigating the incident. It has become evident that most victims succumbed to smoke inhalation due to the absence of ventilation in the building. Blocked escape routes further hindered residents' ability to flee the fire.
