Devastating Blaze in a Four-Storey Building

A severe fire erupted early Sunday morning in a four-storey building located in the Vivek Vihar area of Delhi. This tragic incident has resulted in the loss of nine lives so far, with reports indicating that most victims succumbed to smoke inhalation. Firefighters worked tirelessly to rescue approximately 15 individuals, two of whom sustained injuries.

What Caused the Fire?

Initial reports suggest that the fire ignited around 3:30 AM on the second floor of the building. It is suspected that a short circuit led to the explosion of an air conditioner's compressor, which quickly engulfed the entire structure in flames. The intensity of the fire was such that residents had little time to react.

Challenges Faced During Rescue Operations

According to fire officer Mukesh Verma, fire engines arrived promptly at the scene. However, the rescue efforts were significantly hampered by strong iron grills and mesh on the windows. Additionally, the building featured electronic locks on doors that failed to open during the power outage caused by the fire. The narrow staircases and lack of an exit route at the back trapped many individuals inside.

Status of the Victims

The fire department has recovered nine charred bodies from various floors of the building. Among those rescued, one individual suffered burns covering 30% of his body and has been admitted to GTB Hospital. The police's crime branch is currently investigating the incident, while forensic experts are working to determine the exact cause of the fire.
