Devastating Fire Incident in Malviya Nagar
A catastrophic fire erupted in a crowded street hotel in Malviya Nagar, Delhi, on Wednesday morning, resulting in the heartbreaking deaths of at least 21 individuals, including 12 foreign nationals. This incident starkly highlights the severe negligence of fire safety regulations and administrative oversight.
Delhi's Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has demanded a comprehensive report from the district magistrate regarding the Malviya Nagar fire and warned that strict action will be taken if any negligence is found.
Accountability for the Tragedy
Gupta stated that those responsible for this tragedy will be held accountable. In a post on the social media platform 'X', she emphasized that a thorough investigation into the deficiencies that led to the devastating fire at the guesthouse will be conducted, and accountability will be established for anyone found at fault.
She also announced that a magistrate's inquiry has been ordered, and a First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against the property owner.
Crackdown on Illegal Properties
The Chief Minister indicated that a citywide crackdown on illegal properties, unauthorized guesthouses, and establishments violating fire safety and building codes will commence. Such properties will be sealed, and legal action will be taken as per the law.
The fire broke out at a hotel operating without a No Objection Certificate (NOC) in a congested lane of Malviya Nagar. The incident claimed the lives of at least 21 people, including 12 foreigners. The blaze started around 8:30 AM at the Flourish Stay B&B, rapidly spreading through the five-story building located in a narrow alley.
Safety Concerns Raised
Officials reported that the building had only one entrance and exit, with windows permanently sealed and the main door operated by sensors. These factors contributed to the building becoming a death trap.
In light of this tragedy, the Delhi government is poised to take stringent measures. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has made it clear that a significant campaign against illegal and unsafe buildings will be launched throughout the city.
Establishments violating fire safety regulations and building bye-laws will be identified, and illegal properties and unauthorized guesthouses will be sealed immediately. Strict punitive actions will be enforced against owners who disregard regulations.
This heart-wrenching incident has once again raised serious concerns about the safety measures in illegally operated hotels in densely populated residential areas of Delhi.
