Tragic Fire Claims Six Lives During Magh Festival in Himachal Pradesh
A Night of Celebration Turns to Tragedy
In a devastating incident in Himachal Pradesh's Sirmaur district, a festive gathering turned into a nightmare as six individuals from two families lost their lives in a fire. The tragedy unfolded late Sunday night in Talagna village, located approximately 15 kilometers from Nauhradhar, where the victims had gathered to celebrate the Magh festival.
The fire broke out at the residence of Mohan Singh, where the families were guests. It is believed that the blaze was ignited by a burning angithi, which quickly spread through the room. The situation escalated when a gas cylinder exploded, engulfing the house in flames and trapping the occupants inside.
By the time villagers arrived, alerted by the explosion and cries for help, the house was already consumed by fire, leaving no chance for escape.
Victims of the Festival
The families had come from various regions of the state to partake in Magh Sankranti, a festival celebrated with fairs and gatherings in Sirmaur. Among the deceased were sisters Kavita and Tripta, who had brought their families to their maternal home for the occasion.
The victims have been identified as: Kavita Thakur, her three children Sarika, Kritika, and Kritic, and Naresh Kumar along with his wife Tripta. The only survivor, Lokendra Singh, suffered severe burns and has been transported to a hospital in Solan for treatment.
Witnesses reported that the families were asleep when the fire ignited, and the explosion sealed all exits, transforming the home into a deadly trap.
Community in Mourning
The village of Talagna is enveloped in grief, with homes closed and conversations hushed. A villager expressed sorrow, stating, "This house was filled with joy when they arrived as guests. Now it is filled with the smell of smoke and death."
Neighbors recounted hearing a loud explosion followed by desperate cries, but by the time help arrived, it was too late.
Government Response and Condolences
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed his profound sorrow over the incident and has called for an immediate investigation. He stated, "The loss of six lives in such a heartbreaking accident has deeply affected us. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the grieving families and have instructed the administration to provide all necessary support to those affected."
He also urged the public to exercise caution when using heaters, angithis, and gas cylinders during the winter months.
Political leaders from various parties, including Union Minister JP Nadda and former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, have also expressed their condolences. Local MLA Vinay Kumar, currently in Delhi, announced his return to support the affected families and visit the site of the tragedy.
