New Delhi, May 3: A devastating fire erupted in a residential structure located in Vivek Vihar early on Sunday morning, resulting in the tragic deaths of nine individuals from two families, including a young child.


The blaze was reported at approximately 3:48 AM in a four-storey building situated in Vivek Vihar Phase I. Emergency services, including police and fire departments, quickly responded to the scene following the alarm.


As per police reports, the fire spread across the second, third, and fourth floors, prompting a significant rescue operation. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown at this time.


The Delhi Fire Service (DFS) confirmed that nine charred bodies were retrieved from various locations within the building.


According to a DFS officer, "One body was found on the first floor, five on the second floor, and three in a locked staircase."


The victims on the second floor included Arvind Jain (60), his wife Anita Jain (58), their son Nishant Jain (35), daughter-in-law Anchal Jain (33), and their grandchild Akash Jain.


On the third floor, three members of another family—Nitin Jain (50), his wife Shailey Jain (48), and their son Samyak Jain (25)—were discovered deceased.


Additionally, a woman named Shikha Jain (45) was found dead on the first floor, while her husband Naveen Jain (48) suffered injuries.


A senior police official reported that between 10 to 15 individuals were rescued during the firefighting efforts. Two people with minor injuries were transported to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital for treatment.


In total, 12 fire engines were dispatched to extinguish the flames, with assistance from the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), traffic police, and local law enforcement in the rescue and evacuation operations.


After several hours, the fire was finally brought under control. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the cause of the incident.
