Muzaffarpur, Jun 4: A devastating fire broke out in the ICU of a private hospital in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, early Thursday morning, resulting in the loss of at least five lives.
The fire ignited around 3 AM at Prasad Hospital, located in the Brahmpura area, and rapidly engulfed the intensive care unit, filling it with thick smoke.
According to Muzaffarpur Municipal Commissioner Rituraj Singh, five fatalities have been confirmed, and several individuals are receiving treatment for injuries at various medical facilities.
District Magistrate Subrat Kumar Sen reported that approximately 13 to 15 patients were present in the ICU at the time of the incident, and their families have since relocated them to other hospitals.
"We are making efforts to contact the families of the deceased and the other patients. The fire has been contained," Sen stated.

Initial investigations suggest that the fire may have been caused by a short circuit, although a thorough inquiry will determine the precise cause.
Singh mentioned that a five-member committee has been established by the District Magistrate to investigate the incident.
Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary referred to the event as "extremely tragic" and extended his condolences to the families affected.
He announced that an ex gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh will be provided to each family of the deceased. The local administration is on high alert, ensuring that sufficient medical support is available for the injured.
Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary stated that the cause of the fire is under investigation, and the government will take necessary actions based on the findings.
Former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed his sorrow over the incident, calling it heart-wrenching and offering condolences to the families of the victims.
"The tragic loss of lives in the accident caused by a fire in a private hospital in Muzaffarpur district of the state is extremely heart-wrenching. I offer deep condolences to the bereaved families, and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured," he posted on social media.
