Tragic Fire Claims Life of Italian Woman at Dominican Republic Resort
Fire Incident at Beach Resort
A devastating fire at a beach resort in the Dominican Republic has resulted in the death of an Italian woman, prompting the evacuation of approximately 1,700 guests. Francesca Valentino, a 45-year-old mother of two, tragically succumbed to smoke inhalation during the incident at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach Hotel in Bayahibe on Friday. Authorities confirmed that she was the sole fatality in the blaze, while three individuals were transported to medical facilities in Bayahibe, and six others received treatment on-site, as reported by the Dominican Republic's pre-hospital emergency directorate.
Valentino, who was set to celebrate her 46th birthday in July, was vacationing with her husband, whom she wed in 2017. They were staying in Bayahibe, a fishing village that holds personal significance for the couple, as it is where they first met. Originally hailing from Caserta, near Naples, Valentino later resided in Rome before relocating to the Dominican Republic. According to her social media, she and her husband welcomed two daughters on the island before returning to Italy and establishing a life in Caserta, where she operated a small bed and breakfast.
In 2018, Valentino featured in the Italian documentary series Mollo tutto e cambio vita ("I'm dropping everything and changing my life"), which chronicles the journeys of Italians seeking new lifestyles abroad. During her appearance, she shared, "I left Italy with a two-month plane ticket, but I never went back. I've now been living here for four years, found love, got married, and had a daughter, who's already two years old. I'm happy with my choice; I'd never go back." Her brother, David, also moved to the Dominican Republic in 2014 after leaving his ballet instructor position in Rome. Valentino had a background in fashion design, having worked in Milan.
Officials indicated that the fire's rapid spread was exacerbated by the resort's palm-thatched roofing and prevailing weather conditions. The Dominican Republic's Emergency Operations Center (COE) stated, "Preliminary observations indicate that the fire spread rapidly due to the flammable nature of parts of the roof structures made of palm, as well as wind conditions." An investigation into the fire's cause is currently underway.
