New Delhi, June 3: A catastrophic fire erupted at the Lemon Green Restaurant in Malviya Nagar, Delhi, early Wednesday morning, resulting in the deaths of at least 20 individuals and leaving many others injured, according to officials.
Rescue operations have successfully saved 37 people, who have since been transported to local hospitals. The search for any remaining individuals is ongoing.
Witnesses reported that some patrons attempted to escape by jumping from the upper floors of the establishment. Several of the injured are currently in critical condition.
High-ranking officials from the Delhi Police, Fire Services, and rescue teams are actively managing the situation at the site.
Upon receiving the emergency call, ten fire engines were dispatched promptly, and the blaze was quickly contained, although the destruction was significant.
In a statement to the press, SDM Jitender Kumar remarked, "I was informed of the incident this morning and directed teams to respond immediately. I had training scheduled but prioritized coming here. It appears that the restaurant was operating in the building's basement. The precise cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it likely originated there."
Ongoing search and rescue efforts are focused on locating any individuals who may still be trapped within the structure.
"We will enforce strict penalties against those who breach safety regulations. It is imperative to take decisive action against such violations. I will also ensure that the relevant authorities address illegal operations masquerading as legitimate businesses," SDM Kumar added.
More information will be provided as it becomes available.
This incident follows another alarming event just a day prior, where ten people sustained injuries due to a suspected LPG cylinder explosion that caused a building to collapse in Mukundpur, Delhi.
