Tragic Farmer Suicide in Bolangir: A Heartbreaking Tale of Debt and Crop Failure
Farmer's Despair Leads to Tragic Decision
Bolangir: In a tragic incident, a farmer from Dandara village, located in the Dangarpada panchayat of Muribahal block, reportedly took his own life on Friday by ingesting pesticide due to overwhelming crop losses and mounting debts.
The individual, identified as 45-year-old Rajkumar Patra, faced significant distress stemming from a failed harvest attributed to insufficient rainfall and the weight of his financial obligations.
This season, Rajkumar had planted paddy and finger millets, relying on loans from both private lenders and microfinance institutions to support his agricultural endeavors.
Unfortunately, a severe lack of rainfall in the Bangomunda region halted his farming efforts, leading to increasing anxiety for Rajkumar in the days leading up to the tragedy. On Friday morning, he visited his fields as usual, where he reportedly consumed pesticide.
Nearby laborers discovered him lying in the field and quickly transported him to Kantabanji Hospital. Sadly, he succumbed to his condition during treatment around 1 PM. After the post-mortem examination, his remains were returned to his family.
