Final Farewell with State Honors

Thiruvananthapuram, August 5 - R. Rajesh, a swimming instructor who tragically lost his life while attempting to rescue a person near Meenathulli Island in Kannur district on August 1, was laid to rest on Wednesday with full state honors. The atmosphere at his home in Kalliur was filled with deep emotion as his son repeatedly pleaded to see his father's face one last time, moving Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan to tears.

The Chief Minister stood by the grieving family before departing with tears in his eyes. After political leaders, including the Chief Minister and state ministers, paid their respects to Rajesh's mortal remains, uniformed police officers honored him with a gun salute during the funeral. Hundreds gathered at his residence to pay their last respects as his body was made available for public viewing.

A Family's Heartbreak

Rajesh's father shared with reporters that the family had held onto hope until Tuesday that he would return alive, but their hopes were shattered when his body was recovered. Earlier that day, the Chief Minister announced at a press conference that the government would ensure the completion of Rajesh's unfinished house. Rajesh had given his life jacket to a person he rescued from the raging Karyangod River, which ultimately cost him his life.

While bringing back 61-year-old Benny, who had been saved from the floodwaters, Rajesh was swept away by the strong currents. His body was found on Tuesday. The Chief Minister described the incident as heartbreaking, noting that Rajesh was a dedicated rescuer who had volunteered during previous floods in Kerala and the Wayanad disaster.

A Legacy of Bravery

In a post on social media, the Chief Minister remarked that Rajesh had selflessly given his life jacket to save a drowning man in Pullingom, Kannur, just before being engulfed by the floodwaters. His ultimate sacrifice and love for humanity will always be remembered, and he extended his heartfelt condolences to Rajesh's family, friends, and loved ones.

Rajesh's courage will live on. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the president of the state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party, expressed his sorrow over Rajesh's passing. Chandrasekhar, the BJP MLA from the Nemam constituency, stated that Rajesh was a hero during the 2018 floods, the 2024 Wayanad disaster, and ultimately made the supreme sacrifice in 2026.

In a social media post, the BJP leader highlighted Rajesh's dedication as a volunteer rescuer and 'rappelling instructor' who always stepped up when Kerala needed help. He was active during the 2018 floods, participated in the rescue efforts during the Wayanad landslide tragedy in 2024, and ultimately gave his life in 2026.

The Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly, Pinarayi Vijayan, also expressed his condolences on Tuesday regarding the swimming instructor's untimely death.
