Yangon: A devastating explosion in a village located in Myanmar's Shan State has resulted in the deaths of at least 55 individuals, with numerous others sustaining injuries, as reported by local news outlets on Monday.


According to a rebel armed group, the explosion was triggered by the accidental detonation of materials that were purportedly stored for mining activities.


The incident took place around noon on Sunday in Kaung Tat village, situated in Namhkam Township, close to the border with China.


This region is currently under the control of the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), which has been involved in a prolonged conflict with Myanmar's military government.


Reports indicate that the explosion caused widespread destruction throughout the village, leading to a tragic loss of life.


Local sources cited by the BBC confirmed that among the deceased were 25 women and 30 men.


Rescue operations persisted throughout the day and into the night, with emergency teams searching through the rubble for survivors and recovering bodies trapped under collapsed structures.


Local media have reported that over 100 homes were damaged in the explosion, with entire sections of the village severely impacted. Many buildings were left in ruins, displacing numerous families who are now in dire need of aid.


In a statement released via Telegram, the political wing of the TNLA, known as the Palaung State Liberation Front, expressed sorrow over the loss of life and the devastation caused by the explosion.


"The Palaung State Liberation Front/TNLA extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of those who perished, were injured, or suffered losses due to the explosion," the group stated.


They noted that the explosion occurred around noon local time and announced that an investigation has been initiated to clarify the circumstances surrounding the event.


The organization emphasized that anyone found responsible for the explosion would be held accountable once the inquiry is completed.


Additionally, the TNLA has pledged to provide support to those affected by this tragedy and assured that assistance will be offered to the victims and their families.


Authorities and local organizations are actively evaluating the extent of the damage as rescue teams continue their search for any remaining survivors.
