The explosion occurred around 2 PM on Tuesday while approximately 40 to 50 workers were present at the site.
The blast created a chaotic scene as workers rushed to escape the area.
Initial investigations indicate that a burst boiler tube may have caused the accident, although the precise cause remains to be officially confirmed.
SP Praful Thakur had earlier reported that four workers had died and 15 others were injured, with the number of casualties likely to increase as rescue teams continue to search for trapped individuals.
Many of the injured sustained serious burn injuries and were quickly transported to local hospitals for urgent care.
Some victims have been referred to advanced medical facilities, including Jindal Fortis Hospital in Raigarh.
Emergency responders, including police and fire brigade personnel, along with district administration teams, arrived promptly to initiate rescue and relief efforts.
Local officials are overseeing the debris removal and are working to reach affected areas within the plant.
This incident has raised significant concerns regarding safety standards in Chhattisgarh's industrial sector, particularly at power plants that manage high-pressure boilers.
Vedanta Limited, the operator of the facility, has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
Senior officials, including the district Collector, have arrived at the scene to assess the situation.
An inquiry has been launched to investigate the cause of the explosion and to evaluate whether there were any lapses in safety protocols or maintenance practices.
As rescue operations continue, authorities have urged the public to remain calm and have promised comprehensive medical and financial assistance to the families of the deceased and injured workers.
Further updates on the casualty count and the condition of the injured are anticipated later on Tuesday evening.
This incident adds to a troubling trend of industrial accidents in the state, underscoring the urgent need for stricter enforcement of safety regulations in hazardous work environments.
