A Lucky Number Turns Unlucky
For Vijay Rupani, the former Chief Minister of Gujarat, the number 1206 was considered a lifelong lucky charm. However, following his tragic death, this number has now become a symbol of misfortune. Rupani had a deep belief in the significance of 1206, which was prominently displayed on the license plates of all his vehicles, from scooters to cars. Friends recall that this number was always his good luck charm. Ironically, fate dealt him a cruel blow as he passed away on June 12, marking the end of his life journey on 12/06.
Details of the Fatal Flight
Rupani was aboard an Air India flight that tragically crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad. He was en route to London, where his wife and daughter awaited his arrival. Initially scheduled to travel on June 5, he postponed his trip due to the upcoming by-elections in Ludhiana West on June 19, as he needed to focus on campaigning. Sunil Jakhar, the Punjab BJP president, informed the media about this change in plans, suggesting that perhaps fate had other intentions for him.
A Community in Mourning
In Rajkot, a somber atmosphere envelops the city as Rupani had dedicated a significant part of his life to public service. He was not just a politician but a leader who was approachable, a good neighbor, and a person always willing to help others. Those who knew him are becoming emotional as they remember his humility. Neighbors expressed that he was more than just a leader; he was Vijaybhai, their friend and neighbor.
Family's Heartfelt Grief
Mehul Rupani, his nephew, shared, "The family is shattered by the news of my uncle's tragic death. Anjali Aunty (Rupani's wife) and their daughter have returned from London, and other relatives are coming from the USA. We will arrange to bring his body back according to government procedures. The entire family is in shock." Meanwhile, Rupani's personal assistant, Shailesh Mandaliya, recounted, "I dropped him off at the airport, and just moments later, I received the heartbreaking news." It is noteworthy that Vijay Rupani was born on August 2, 1956, in Myanmar (then Rangoon) into a Jain family. He was the youngest of seven siblings. Due to political instability in Myanmar, his family relocated to Rajkot in 1960. Rupani served as a member of the Rajya Sabha, a member of the Gujarat Assembly, and was the Chief Minister of the state twice.
Arrival of Family in Gujarat
Vijay Rupani's wife, Anjali Rupani, has returned to their residence in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The state's Home Minister, Harsh Sanghvi, was present at Ahmedabad Airport to receive her.
