Fatal Incidents Involving Wild Elephants

On Sunday, two individuals lost their lives due to separate incidents involving wild elephants in Jharkhand, as reported by local officials. The deceased have been identified as Champa Kui (47) from Kitapi village in West Singhbhum district and Virendra Korwa from Matnag village in Latehar district.


According to officials, Champa Kui stepped outside her home around 4:30 AM when an elephant, reportedly separated from its herd, entered the village and trampled her. Following the incident, villagers alerted the forest department authorities.


A team from the department arrived at the scene and provided the family with an interim relief of ₹20,000. They assured the family that compensation would be granted according to government provisions once formalities were completed.


In a separate incident in Matnag village, located under the Chipdohar police station area in Latehar district, an elephant crushed Korwa around 4 PM. He was returning home from the local market when a herd of elephants surrounded him and fatally injured him. Upon receiving the news, a team from the forest department, including Ranger Ajay Toppo and Forest Guard Ram Kashyap, arrived to investigate the incident.
