Tragic Elephant Attack Claims Lives in Jharkhand Village

Fatal Incident in Bokaro District

Bokaro, Feb 5: A devastating incident occurred in Jharkhand's Bokaro district early Thursday morning, where three family members lost their lives after being trampled by a herd of elephants. This tragic event has caused widespread panic and sorrow among local residents, according to officials.

The attack took place in Barkipunnu village, located within the Gomia block. Villagers reported that the elephants first entered the area around 7 p.m. on Wednesday, but the community successfully drove them back into the forest by raising an alarm.

Unfortunately, the herd returned around 3 a.m. on Thursday, leading to chaos in the village. During this incident, three individuals from the Karmali family, including two women and a man, were killed instantly.

The victims have been identified as Ganga Karmali, Kamli Devi, and Bhagiya Devi. Two other family members who were severely injured were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, where their conditions are being closely monitored by medical staff.

The village of Barkipunnu is now engulfed in grief, with residents expressing their shock over the incident.

Local inhabitants noted a significant increase in elephant activity in the region over recent months, attributing the rise in fatal encounters to a lack of effective preventive measures.

This incident follows another tragic event on January 25, when Karamchand Soren was killed in the nearby Darhabera village, also within the Gomia block.

In response to that earlier attack, state minister Yogendra Prasad had instructed the Forest Department to take action against the elephant threat.

Despite these assurances, the latest tragedy has raised serious concerns regarding the Forest Department's readiness and response capabilities.

According to official reports, over 18 individuals have died in elephant-related incidents across Jharkhand since the beginning of this year.

The increasing number of fatalities has highlighted the urgent need to address the human-elephant conflict in the state, with calls for effective measures to prevent further tragedies.
