Kyiv: Local authorities reported that a Russian drone strike in Ukraine's Sumy region resulted in the deaths of three individuals on Saturday. This incident coincided with Romania's military downing a drone over its territory for the second time within 48 hours.

Oleh Hryhorov, the head of the Sumy region, stated that the drone targeted a 'civilian facility,' igniting a significant fire. The deceased were identified as drivers working for Nova Poshta, a private postal and courier service in Ukraine.

In a separate incident in Zaporizhzhia, southeastern Ukraine, a drone attack on a shopping center on Friday night led to a fire that engulfed an area of 500 square meters, resulting in multiple injuries, according to regional leader Ivan Fedorov.

A substantial Russian offensive on Friday near Kyiv, where a defense industry event was taking place, tragically claimed the lives of at least 10 people and left nearly 100 others injured.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy cautioned in his evening address that intelligence reports suggested Russia was gearing up for a significant missile strike on Ukraine, with indications that this could occur within the next 48 hours.

In response, Romania's defense ministry announced on Saturday that its forces had 'safely shot down' a drone that had entered its airspace in an 'unpopulated area' close to the Ukrainian border. Romanian President Nicuor Dan confirmed on Facebook that the drone was intercepted by an F-16 pilot.

This interception followed another drone being shot down near Padina, northeast of Bucharest, on Friday.

Since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, both Russian and Ukrainian drones have repeatedly violated Romanian airspace and that of other NATO countries.

In June, a Ukrainian maritime drone exploded at the Black Sea port of Constanta, while three additional sea drones detonated outside the port, fortunately causing no injuries.

Previously, a Russian drone, which had strayed off course during an attack on Ukraine, struck an apartment building in eastern Romania, injuring two individuals.
