Tragic Dog Attack Claims Lives of Para-Athlete and Villager in Odisha
Devastating Incident in Chhendjad Village
Gudvela: A heartbreaking event unfolded in Chhendjad village, located in the Bolangir district, where para-athlete Jogendra Chhatria, aged 33, tragically passed away late Saturday night at Burla Medical College due to injuries from a stray dog attack.
Jogendra, who was not married, had proudly represented both Odisha and India in volleyball.
His family shared that he had dreams of excelling in sports and bringing honor to his country. In a related incident, another villager, Hrushikesh Rana, aged 47, also succumbed to injuries from the same dog bite on Sunday, while four others are currently in critical condition and receiving medical care.
Reports indicate that on July 23, a stray dog attacked multiple residents of Chhendjad village, including Keshab Nag, Meghnad Chhatria, Phul Chhatria, R. Rana, Jogendra, and Hrushikesh, in a series of bites.
All victims were initially taken to a local health center. As Jogendra and Hrushikesh's conditions deteriorated, they were transferred to Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital in Bolangir, and subsequently referred to Burla Hospital.
Doctors confirmed Jogendra's death on Saturday night, while Hrushikesh was advised to return home without further treatment.
Unfortunately, he passed away around 9:30 AM on Sunday during the journey back.
The last rites for Hrushikesh were conducted in the village, while Jogendra was cremated in Burla following a post-mortem examination.
The tragic news of these two fatalities has cast a shadow over the village, instilling fear among the residents.
Villagers are calling for adequate measures to ensure the recovery of those still injured.
