Kolkata, Nov 6: A tragic incident unfolded in Raiganj, located in West Bengal's North Dinajpur district, where the semi-decomposed body of a 12-year-old girl was discovered in a forested area on Friday morning. The girl had been reported missing for two days, leading to heightened tensions in the community.
The circumstances surrounding the discovery of the body, which was found unclothed, have raised serious concerns regarding potential sexual assault and homicide. Authorities have indicated that the precise nature of the crime will be determined following a post-mortem examination.
Family members reported that the girl had gone out for a bicycle ride on November 3 but failed to return home. Despite extensive searches conducted by her family, they were unable to locate her, prompting them to file a missing person report at the Raiganj Police Station on the same day.
On Friday morning, news emerged that a minor girl's body had been located in the jungle. Family members hurried to the scene and confirmed the identity of the body as that of their missing relative, who was in a state of partial decomposition.
Law enforcement officials arrived at the site, recovered the body, and sent it for a post-mortem examination.
The victim's relatives suspect that she may have been sexually assaulted prior to her death. The girl's aunt shared her distress, stating, "I went out for work on Tuesday morning. When I returned, I learned she was missing. We searched everywhere but could not find her. Now, her body has been found in the jungle."
The Raiganj police have initiated an investigation to uncover the details surrounding the girl's death and to identify any suspects.
"While we also suspect this could be a case of rape and murder, we cannot definitively confirm sexual assault at this point. The post-mortem report will provide clarity. The examination is scheduled for Friday," stated an investigating officer.
Investigators are working to piece together the timeline from when the girl went missing to the discovery of her body. They are also reviewing CCTV footage from the vicinity and examining the girl's mobile phone as part of their inquiry.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with this tragic case.
