Incident Overview

Malkangiri: A young man, Tanup Dey, was discovered dead in a hotel room on Monday morning after being detained by Haryana Police in connection with a drug trafficking investigation. His death has led to heightened tensions within the community.

Dey, a resident of MV-65 village, was apprehended by Hansi Police on Sunday night as part of a cannabis smuggling operation. Following his arrest, he was taken to the Kalimela police station and subsequently presented before a court at MV-79.

The police sought judicial approval to take Dey into custody for further questioning in Haryana. After receiving the court's consent, they arranged for him to stay at a hotel in Malkangiri due to the late hour.

However, reports indicate that he was found hanging in his hotel room the following morning. Family members and local residents have alleged that he suffered police brutality and that his death is being misrepresented as a suicide, although these claims have not been independently verified.

The incident has incited unrest at the Malkangiri police station, where Haryana Police were present. A significant crowd of locals gathered outside, demanding a thorough investigation and accountability for the officers allegedly involved.

In response, the Malkangiri Police have launched an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Dey's death.
