Tragic Death of Young Girl in Manipur Relief Camp Raises Safety Concerns

Imphal, April 6: A tragic incident unfolded in a relief camp for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Imphal East, Manipur, where an eight-year-old girl was discovered dead shortly after being reported missing. This event has sparked widespread panic among the displaced community and raised urgent questions regarding the safety protocols in such camps.
The young girl, who lived in Moreh Ward No. 9 (Moreh Khunou Leikai), was last seen on the evening of April 5.
As the news of her disappearance spread, her family and other residents of the camp began searching the nearby ponds and surrounding areas, but their efforts were in vain.
A report regarding her missing status was filed at the Irilbung Police Station around 7:30 PM.
In response, police teams, including senior officers from Imphal East and Imphal West, initiated an extensive search operation.
They also reviewed CCTV footage from nearby locations as part of their investigation.
During the inquiry, authorities detained Laishram Langamba, a 28-year-old resident of Churachandpur, who was staying in the same relief camp as the victim.
Law enforcement officials identified him as the primary suspect in the case.
During questioning, he reportedly admitted to the crime and indicated that he had disposed of the girl's body near Singjamei Bridge along the Imphal River.
Following this revelation, police located the body around 2:30 AM on April 6. It has been sent to the JNIMS mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to uncover the motive behind this tragic event. They noted that the post-mortem results will help determine if any sexual assault occurred.
This incident has deeply unsettled the community within the relief camps, prompting families to voice their fears and call for improved security measures.
