Tragic Death of Yemeni Adventurer Known as 'Spider-Man of Yemen'
Yemeni Adventurer Falls to His Death
A well-known Yemeni climber, dubbed the "Spider-Man of Yemen," tragically lost his life after plunging into a volcanic crater during a perilous climb without any safety measures, according to local authorities. The individual, 30-year-old Al-Qaqa Ibn Antar, was attempting to scale the steep walls of the Hardah Dam volcanic crater in the Dhale province of southern Yemen when he slipped and fell.
Footage released by Yemen's Civil Defence Authority captured the moments leading up to the incident, showing Antar climbing a rocky cliff using only his hands, devoid of ropes or harnesses. At one point, he was seen gripping the rock face with one hand while raising the other, but he soon lost his hold and fell into the crater, which is approximately 120 meters deep.
Four-Hour Rescue Effort
In the aftermath of the fall, rescue teams, including divers and water rescue experts, were quickly mobilized to the scene. After an extensive four-hour search, they successfully retrieved Antar's body from about 30 meters beneath the water's surface within the crater. Officials noted that the rescue operation was particularly difficult due to the steep and rugged terrain surrounding the site.
Renowned for Daring Climbs
Antar had garnered a significant following on social media, where he shared videos of his climbs across Yemen's challenging landscapes without any safety equipment. His thrilling performances often went viral, showcasing him hanging from cliffs with only his bare hands, legs dangling perilously over steep drops. This audacious approach to climbing earned him the nickname "Spider-Man of Yemen" among his fans. In light of this tragedy, the Civil Defence Authority has urged climbers and adventure enthusiasts to adhere to safety protocols and utilize appropriate protective gear to prevent similar accidents in the future.
